Roberto Martinez confirms Portugal exit after 2026 World Cup

0
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has confirmed he will step down from his role following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Spaniard made the announcement during his post-match press conference after Portugal's Round of 16 defeat to Spain (1-0). Martinez, who took over from Fernando Santos, revealed the decision had been planned well in advance. "This is my last cycle with the team. I'll leave after the World Cup," he said. The 51-year-old stated he wanted to give the Portuguese Football Federation enough time to identify his successor, while he intends to evaluate his own future in coaching. Portugal now face a delicate yet manageable situation — Martinez remains under contract and will continue to lead the squad through qualification and into the tournament itself. The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will mark the end of his tenure.
