England's Jarell Quansah Banned for Two World Cup Games After Red Card Against Mexico

England defender Jarell Quansah has been suspended for two matches following his straight red card in the last-16 win over Mexico, confirmed by FIFA’s disciplinary committee on Tuesday.
Quansah will sit out Saturday’s quarterfinal against Norway. Should England advance, he would also miss the semifinal, which would pit them against either Argentina or Switzerland. He would only be available for a potential final or the third-place playoff.
The ban stems from a 54th-minute challenge on Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo. Quansah, starting at right-back, slid in recklessly, catching Gallardo with his studs after VAR intervened and upgraded the referee’s initial decision from no foul to a red card. FIFA ruled the tackle breached Article 14 of its code of conduct regarding serious foul play, triggering a two-game suspension.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel had considered appealing the red card, arguing Quansah made contact with the ball. But the FA ultimately decided not to challenge it, and now they face the prospect of an extended ban. News correspondent Rob Dorsett said: “It’s been to the disciplinary committee, who have the jurisdiction to look at the challenge again and decide if it’s worthy of more than the standard one-game ban. They’ve decided it’s a dangerous tackle and extended it to a two-match ban.”
The suspension leaves Tuchel with a major headache at right-back. Reece James has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since England’s second group game against Ghana. Djed Spence was only fit enough for the bench against Mexico after his own injury struggles. Ezri Konsa, primarily a center-back, is now the likeliest candidate to fill in at right-back for the Norway match.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher backed the decision: “I do think it’s a red card. He catches him with his studs halfway up the shin. The VAR has quite rightly recommended a review, and a red card is given.”
England will now weigh whether to appeal the two-match ban. Dorsett added: “I suspect they will have to let the dust settle and digest the information before they make a decision.”
