Julian Nagelsmann Resigns as Germany Head Coach After Shock World Cup Exit; Jurgen Klopp 'Ready' to Take Over
0
Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany head coach following the team's stunning round-of-32 exit at the World Cup to Paraguay, and Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he is ready to replace him.
Speaking to Magenta TV on Friday, the former Liverpool boss revealed he has been approached by the German Football Association (DFB) and is open to talks.
"Yes, I can confirm the talks," Klopp said. "Things moved along quite quickly. Julian has resigned and the DFB is working on a successor. And in the course of these considerations, they approached me."
broadcaster Germany reports that DFB officials are set to meet Klopp in New York next week to discuss the role. The 57-year-old currently serves as global head of football at Red Bull, a position he has held since leaving Liverpool in 2024. His contract with Red Bull runs until 2029 but includes a special exit clause for the Germany job.
Klopp admitted the timing is not ideal but insisted he feels re-energized. "Now isn't the perfect timing. But it's better than it's ever been. I'm more than refuelled now, I'm ready," he said. He also expressed confidence that Red Bull will not block the move. "I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I've said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I usually honour contracts. But I've also made it clear that I'm interested in talks with the DFB."
Nagelsmann, 38, took charge of Germany in September 2023 and led them to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual champions Spain. At this World Cup, Germany topped Group E after thrashing debutants Curaçao 7-1 and beating Ivory Coast 2-1, before a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador. They then crashed out in the round of 32 after a 1-1 draw with Paraguay, losing on penalties.
"I am not someone who runs away," Nagelsmann said after the defeat. "But if the DFB wants me to continue I am going to continue. I know the mechanics of football."
The DFB released a statement thanking Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023, describing him as "extremely responsible and sincere." The statement added: "Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp. He has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position."
broadcaster Germany reporter Dennis Bayer said: "It would be a dream come true that many Germans had for a lot of years. The DFB itself confirmed that it will talk with Jurgen Klopp in the next days – and he has already given his initial go-ahead. There is a good chance that Jurgen Klopp returns to the sidelines and becomes the new head coach of Germany."
If appointed, Klopp would take charge of a national team for the first time, marking his return to coaching after a two-year break.
