FIFA Breaks Its Own Unwritten Rule for Messi’s World Cup Quarterfinal

FIFA has abandoned its long-standing unwritten policy on referee appointments ahead of Argentina’s World Cup quarterfinal against Switzerland, a match that will see Lionel Messi lead the defending champions into the last eight.
For the first time in 99 games at the 2026 tournament, the governing body has assigned a central referee whose home confederation is not neutral to the fixture. Portuguese official Joao Pinheiro will take charge of the clash between the Albiceleste and Switzerland, even though his nation is no longer competing in the competition.
Previously, FIFA had ensured that when two teams from different confederations met, the referee came from a third confederation. That unwritten rule has now been set aside as the organisation turns to experienced, high-pressure officials for the knockout rounds.
Pinheiro is the only central referee among the quarterfinal appointments whose country has already been eliminated. Argentina’s Facundo Tello will handle France against Morocco, England’s Michael Oliver will referee Spain versus Belgium, and Frenchman Clement Turpin will oversee Norway’s meeting with England.
The decision comes after a series of controversial refereeing incidents during the tournament, including Folarin Balogun’s red card against Bosnia, Ilgiz Tantashev’s performance in Panama’s loss to France, and a disputed disallowed goal for Germany’s Jonathan Tah against Panama.
FIFA’s chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina defended the appointments, saying: “Of course, constructive discussion about decisions will always be part of football, but unfounded allegations have no place in our sport. Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials.”
Argentina, led by Messi’s eight goals, have already beaten Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt to reach this stage. They now face Switzerland with a potential semifinal against France or Spain waiting in East Rutherford on 19 July.
