Iraola demands more Liverpool signings despite €100m summer spend

New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has made it clear to the club that the current squad needs reinforcement, even after the club already splashed out more than €100 million early in the transfer window.
Speaking to the media for the first time since taking over at Anfield, Iraola didn't hold back. “Obviously, we have signed two players already but we need more players. We know this. The club is working on this,” he said. “Me, as a coach, selfishly, we want the players here from day one to train from pre-season. But we know football doesn’t work like this. The club is working hard to get those signings.”
Iraola took the hotseat earlier this summer after Arne Slot was dismissed following a disappointing campaign that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League. The new boss inherits a squad that has already been boosted by the arrival of Spain international winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna for €40 million and young French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet. Yet Iraola insists more work is needed.
Replacing Mohamed Salah remains the biggest challenge. A RB Leipzig winger has been identified as a target, while a PSG option is also reportedly under consideration. Up front, Hugo Ekitike’s long-term absence leaves a gap in the No.9 role, with no natural alternative beyond the current options.
Defensively, the central area has needed attention since last season. Jacquet’s arrival helps, but the departure of Ibrahima Konate and Giovanni Leoni’s expected extended recovery from a knee injury mean veteran Virgil van Dijk — himself entering what could be his final year at the club — needs another partner.
Midfield is also on the agenda. A lack of consistency in the middle of the park was a recurring issue last term, and Liverpool are expected to address it with a new signing. Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has been regularly linked with a move to Anfield.
