Man Utd Pull Plug on €45m Ederson Deal – But Door Still Open
0
Manchester United have pulled the plug on a €45 million move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after a medical flagged a potential long-term knee issue, but sources confirm the deal could be revived later this summer.
The Brazilian international, 27, initially looked set to join Atletico Madrid before that move collapsed, allowing United to step in. The Old Trafford club had tracked Ederson since at least 2024 and agreed a financial package with Atalanta last month. However, United insisted on delaying the transfer until after the World Cup, and the reason became clear last week: Ederson’s knee problem.
After thorough medical examinations, the Premier League side decided to walk away. The decision opened the door for Andrey Santos and Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans to be targeted instead, but neither is viewed as a direct alternative to Ederson. United feel they still need a player of his profile.
insider, Ben Jacobs and other outlets have confirmed that a revival of the deal remains possible. The knee issue is not affecting Ederson’s current performance, and Atalanta insist he is fully fit. United simply did not want to risk €45m on a player who might develop a chronic problem.
Crucially, Ederson is out of contract next year and keen to take the next step, all but ruling out an extension. Faced with losing him for nothing in 2027, Atalanta may be willing to renegotiate. No decision has been made, but the move is far from dead – Ederson could yet end up at Old Trafford.
