Man Utd forced to make €100m bid as Spurs try to hijack deal for top target
are going all-in on midfielder , forcing to rethink their disciplined summer approach.
The Portugal international is one of the Premier League's most in-demand commodities despite having back-to-back relegations on his CV. Fernandes has been a standout performer in two poor teams and looks increasingly likely to be on the move once again.
After leaving Southampton for West Ham last year, Fernandes is expected to once again abandon a sinking ship, and there is no shortage of suitors. The 21-year-old has been linked with numerous clubs, including Arsenal and PSG.
The most persistent interest, though, has come from Man Utd, who have made him their new top midfield target after resigning themselves to missing out on Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson to Man City.
Personal terms with Fernandes are not expected to be an issue, with the Portuguese youngster keen to make the move to Old Trafford. A bigger hurdle is agreeing a fee with West Ham, who want a pretty penny for the prospect.
Spurs want to hijack Fernandes deal
Despite their relegation and well-documented need to raise funds, the Hammers are playing hardball for Fernandes and are demanding a fee north of €90 million, and potentially even in excess of €100m.
Man Utd, understandably, are reluctant to pay that much. It has been reported that they value Fernandes at a more reasonable €50m-€70m, which has thus far meant that there has been no breakthrough in discussions between the two clubs.
has now provided a worrying update for those of a Man Utd persuasion. It is reported that Tottenham, who were recently linked with Fernandes, are stepping up their pursuit.
Spurs are going big this summer and are prepared to make two major midfield signings. A bid has been rejected by Newcastle for Sandro Tonali, but the North London club are expected to return with another offer.
Alongside Tonali, they also want to bring in Fernandes, and it is now understood that they are willing to pay as much as €100m for him in a bid to beat Man Utd to his signature.
This, it is claimed, could force Man Utd into action and to be more liberal with their spending. They have so far attempted to be disciplined, but if they really want Fernandes, then it increasingly looks as though they will have to pay top dollar.
If they refuse, the Portugal international could be on his way to North London instead, with Tottenham seriously considering making a bid.
