€1bn transfer predicted by 2031 as Neymar's record faces extinction

0
Football's first €1 billion transfer is no longer a fantasy — it's a matter of years away, and Neymar's long-standing world record could be wiped out before the end of this decade. According to research published in The Beautiful Game report, which analyzes current spending patterns, inflation, and the growing financial impact of superstar signings, the game will see its first nine-figure-plus deal hit €1bn by 2031. The Brazil icon's €222m move from Barcelona to PSG in the summer of 2017 remains the most expensive transfer in history. Kylian Mbappé's €180m switch from Monaco to Paris that same year — initially a loan with an obligation to buy — still sits second. But those numbers may soon look like bargains. The report states that the average price for top stars is climbing by 37% year on year. That trajectory was reinforced last summer when Liverpool shattered the British transfer record twice, first landing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for €125m, then snatching Alexander Isak from Newcastle for €145m. Players are becoming more expensive not only because of what they do on the pitch but also because of the off-field revenue they generate — sponsorship deals, social media reach, and merchandise sales. Clubs now factor in those earnings when setting valuations. There has already been chatter about a €1bn move in the pipeline. Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior was rumored to be the target of a Saudi Pro League bid at that figure. Though that speculation has cooled, the financial muscle exists to make it happen. The record has changed hands frequently in the modern era. Before Neymar, Paul Pogba's €105m move from Juventus to Manchester United in 2016 held the mark. Gareth Bale's €101m transfer from Tottenham to Real Madrid in 2013 preceded that. Cristiano Ronaldo's €94m switch from Manchester United to Madrid in 2009 was the benchmark for four years. Other players who have held the world record since 2000 include Kaká, Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo, and Hernán Crespo. Between 1996 and 1999, the record changed five times, with Ronaldo (the Brazilian) and Alan Shearer trading places before the striker regained it by joining Inter in 1997. He remains the only player since Diego Maradona to hold the record twice. After Ronaldo, Denílson and Christian Vieri took the honor. The 50 most expensive transfers list includes many landmark deals: Neymar tops it, followed by Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé (€148m to Barcelona), Isak (€145m to Liverpool), Philippe Coutinho (€135m to Barcelona), João Félix (€127.2m to Atlético Madrid), Wirtz (€125m to Liverpool), Enzo Fernández (€121m to Chelsea), and Antoine Griezmann (€120m to Barcelona). Jack Grealish, Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Juventus, Declan Rice, Moisés Caicedo, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Jude Bellingham, and others round out the top 20. The trend is clear: prices are accelerating. A €1bn player is coming — it's only a question of when.
