Paraguay’s Orlando Gill on verge of life-changing European move after World Cup heroics

0
Orlando Gill, the Paraguay goalkeeper who emerged as one of the stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is closing in on a transfer to Europe. The 26-year-old shot to prominence after saving two penalties to eliminate Germany in the round of 32, then impressed despite Paraguay’s controversial exit against France in the next round. According to transfer journalist Matteo Moretto, Gill’s performances have drawn serious interest from clubs across Europe. San Lorenzo, his current side, are prepared to listen to offers in the region of $7 million, with the player’s representatives expected to travel to Spain soon for further talks. Gill’s path to this moment has been anything but straightforward. Just a few years ago, he was stuck in the reserves of a Paraguayan club and facing dire financial hardship. In December 2022, his son, Lautaro Daniel, was born prematurely after an emergency procedure. With the newborn fighting for his life, Gill sold his boots, kits, and even his youth national team shirt to cover hospital bills. “We had absolutely nothing,” his wife Melissa Avalos recalled. “Orlando sold all his gear – his boots, his club kit, his national team shirt. He literally sold everything so we could pay the expenses while our son fought to survive.” Lautaro pulled through, and Gill eventually found stability by joining Buenos Aires-based San Lorenzo, 15-time Argentine champions. But the struggles did not end there. After being named Man of the Match against Germany and facing his idol Manuel Neuer, an emotional Gill dedicated the performance to his nephew Alexander, who is battling a serious illness. “This trophy is for a nephew of mine who is hospitalised and having a very difficult time,” Gill said after the game. “I promised that if I became the protagonist of this match, this victory would be entirely for him.” Now, the towering shot-stopper is on the brink of a move that would cap an incredible rise – one that, as he has made clear, will always be for Lautaro and Alexander.
