Cristiano Ronaldo sets bizarre World Cup record that might never be broken

0
Cristiano Ronaldo has added another peculiar entry to his World Cup legacy during the 2026 tournament in North America. The 41-year-old Portugal captain took 17 shots across five matches — more than any other player in a single World Cup since detailed tracking began in 1966 — without creating a single chance for a teammate, according to Opta data. That mark pushes Alberto Garcia Aspe's previous record of 15 shots without a chance creation for Mexico in 1998 into second place. Only those two players have ever reached 15 or more shots in a World Cup without setting up a teammate, and with modern football increasingly favoring collective movement over individual heroics, Ronaldo's number may stand forever. Portugal exited the tournament after a 1-0 round-of-16 defeat to Spain. Ronaldo played 441 of a possible 450 minutes under head coach Roberto Martínez. He scored a brace in a 5-0 group-stage demolition of Uzbekistan and netted his first ever World Cup knockout goal from the penalty spot against Croatia in the round of 32. Yet he still has never scored an open-play goal in the knockout rounds of a World Cup, and with his confirmation that he will not play at the 2030 edition, that stat will remain unchanged. The defeat to Spain also tied Ronaldo with Mathew Leckie, Son Heung-min, Antonio Carbajal and Hong Myung-bo for the most losses in World Cup history — eight each. After the match, Ronaldo took a defiant tone. "I've won three titles with Portugal. Before Cristiano, Portugal won nothing," he said. "The biggest title I won with the national team was Euro 2016. For me, the Euro has the same value as a World Cup. That remains forever. Tomorrow is a new day, and we go. I will wake up tomorrow the same as I did today, with a clear conscience, because I gave my best for Portugal. I won three titles with Portugal — before me it was zero titles. I can only be happy."
