Bellingham delivers immortal performance as England survive Mexico thriller to reach quarterfinals
0
Mexico City’s altitude couldn’t slow him down. The lightning storms didn’t faze him. And a hostile Azteca Stadium only seemed to fuel him. Jude Bellingham produced what may go down as the finest individual display by an Englishman in a World Cup knockout match, carrying the Three Lions past a ferocious Mexico side 3-2 and into the quarterfinals.
Thomas Tuchel’s team raced into a dream start when Bellingham struck twice in the space of 98 seconds, silencing the crowd and putting England in control at 7,000 feet. But Mexico hit back through Julián Quiñones before the break, and the momentum swung violently when Jarell Quansah was sent off nine minutes into the second half for a reckless challenge on Jesús Gallardo.
Harry Kane steadied the ship from the penalty spot in the 60th minute, only for Raúl Jiménez to convert a spot kick of his own after Kane fouled Brian Gutiérrez. Down to ten men and clinging to a one-goal lead, England turned to John Stones, Dan Burn and Djed Spence off the bench. The defensive unit, marshaled by Jordan Pickford, produced a heroic rearguard action. Every block, every clearance, every tackle was followed by another. Mexico threw everything forward, but the door never came down.
At the heart of it all was Bellingham. At 23, he became the youngest player to appear in five major international tournaments, and he played like a man who has already seen it all. He crashed the box like Frank Lampard, pressed with the stamina of N’Golo Kanté, and escaped tight spaces with the close control of Andrés Iniesta. His brace took his tournament tally to four goals and one assist, and he has now won three Man of the Match awards in five games. If England go all the way, the Golden Ball will surely follow.
This was not just a match-winning performance. It was a legacy-defining night. Bellingham has long been tipped for greatness, but games like this one — on the biggest stage, under the most extreme conditions, with his team against the ropes — separate the very best from the rest. England now face Norway and Erling Haaland in the quarterfinals. With Bellingham in this form, Thomas Tuchel’s side will fear nobody.
