Golden Boot Battle Heats Up: Messi, Mbappé, Haaland Share Top Spot on Seven Goals

0
The race for the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot is as tight as ever, with three of the game's biggest stars locked together at the summit. Erling Haaland joined Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé on seven goals after leading Norway into the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. The Manchester City striker’s latest strike pushed him level with the other two superstars, setting up an unforgettable finish to the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. England captain Harry Kane is not far behind with five goals, keeping his own hopes alive as the knockout rounds unfold. All-time records are already tumbling. Miroslav Klose’s previous mark of 16 World Cup goals has been surpassed by both Messi and Mbappé, who now sit atop the career charts. Haaland, meanwhile, became Norway’s all-time leading scorer in the competition after just two matches, while Kane moved past Gary Lineker as England's top World Cup marksman. The ultimate prize for the Golden Boot winner would be to chase down Just Fontaine’s single-tournament record of 13 goals, set in 1958. Only three players in World Cup history – Fontaine, Gerd Müller in 1970, and Sándor Kocsis in 1954 – have ever reached double digits in one edition. Other milestones have also fallen. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have now each played in six World Cups, more than any other player. Ronaldo became the first to score in six different tournaments and the oldest to score multiple goals in a single match. Curaçao made history as the smallest nation ever to qualify for the finals, and the opening match between Mexico and South Africa saw a record three red cards. This edition is also the most attended and highest-scoring World Cup of all time.
