UEFA Slams FIFA Over Balogun Red Card Reversal: 'Integrity of Game at Stake'

0
The football world is in uproar after FIFA intervened to overturn Folarin Balogun's red card suspension, clearing the USMNT striker to play in Tuesday's World Cup last-16 clash against Belgium. Balogun, who has three goals in this tournament, was sent off in the previous round against Bosnia-Herzegovina for a studs-up challenge on Tarik Muharemovic. The automatic one-match ban would have kept him out of the knockout fixture. But following a reported phone call from the White House to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the governing body stepped in and suspended the sanction for a probationary year. UEFA responded furiously, calling the decision "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable." In a strongly worded statement, European football's governing body said FIFA had "crossed a red line" and put "the integrity of the game at stake." "A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option," UEFA said. "When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its medias, the credibility of a competition is undermined." Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter also weighed in, posting on social media: "Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies. If a US President intervenes with the FIFA President, the question is unavoidable: Quo vadis, FIFA?" The Belgian FA expressed astonishment and said it was exploring all legal options. England manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking after Jarell Quansah received a red card that will sideline him for the quarterfinal against Norway, highlighted the dangerous precedent: "Where does it end? Do we appeal if a yellow card is not a yellow card?" When asked if Harry Kane could ask Trump to intervene for Quansah, Tuchel quipped, "Maybe. That's a good start." Kickoff between the USA and Belgium is set for Tuesday with Balogun now eligible to feature.
