Semenyo: Ghana ready to challenge England
0
The Ghana national team won the all-important three points against Panama at the 2026 World Cup in a tense match. The Central Americans had the initiative for most of the match in Toronto, however, thanks to Caleb Jerenki's stoppage time goal.
After this success, the attention of the Ghanaian team completely switched to England, which will take place in the key battle of Group L on June 23.
Ghana international and Manchester City striker Antoine Semenyo admitted that the team is looking forward to meeting the Three Lions:
"This game will be different. I am looking forward to this challenge. Everyone in the Ghana team is waiting for him and we want to prove ourselves right. We know it will be a tough game and we will not rush ahead. We want to win, but we understand that it will not be easy," Semenyo told reporters after the game.
According to the forward, now the priority for the team is recovery after the exhausting opening match and quality training before the confrontation with the English.
In the first half against Panama, it was difficult for the Ghanaians to gain a foothold in the game. The opponent successfully exploited the Black Stars' problems in pressing, leaving Semenho isolated in attack. To stabilize the situation, the head coach of Ghana, Carlos Queiroz, resorted to tactical changes.
"In the first 15-20 minutes, we didn't press very well, so the coach put me in the center to raise the team a bit. We felt that we were sitting too deep in defense. That was the essence of the change. But when the game settled down, he returned me to the wing again. We stayed together and did not concede. It was a game of moments, and we found our moment," explained the player.
Antoine himself played a key role in the winning attack, but admits that the episode in the last minutes unfolded so rapidly that he barely remembers all the details:
"The ball bounced quickly and I picked it up. I wanted to pass it into the space for Brandon. It looked like I gave it too much, but he made it. When Brandon got the ball, I wanted to step back at first, then I ran to the near post and completely missed. Luckily, the ball went to Caleb and he scored."
The dramatic outcome caused wild emotions in the stands and on the field. Players, fans and even coach Carlos Queiroz celebrated the victory together immediately after the final whistle. Semenyo personally thanked the fans for their incredible support:
It was crazy. The fans supported us vociferously throughout the game and we are grateful to them for everything. To celebrate this moment with them, teammates, family and friends was incredible."
