Enzo Fernandez sends Argentina to quarterfinals with historic 3000th World Cup goal
0
Enzo Fernandez etched his name into World Cup history by scoring the 3000th goal in the tournament’s history, a winner that completed Argentina’s comeback against Egypt in a thrilling playoff match.
The Chelsea midfielder struck in the 3-2 victory that punched Argentina’s ticket to the quarterfinals. His goal arrived in the 1059th game of World Cup competition, exactly 3000 strikes after Lucien Laurent opened the account for France against Mexico in 1930.
The 1000th World Cup goal came via a Rob Rensenbrink penalty in 1978 (Netherlands 3-2 Scotland), and the 2000th was scored by Sweden’s Marcus Allbäck in a 2-2 draw with England in 2006.
Argentina trailed 2-0 before rallying past Egypt. They will now face either Switzerland or Colombia in the last eight on Sunday, July 12 at 04:00 local time.
