Yakin: 'We Finally Broke the Curse!' — Switzerland Reaches World Cup Quarterfinals for First Time Since 1954

Switzerland ended a 72-year drought by advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1954, edging Colombia in a tense round-of-16 clash that went to penalties after a 0-0 draw through extra time. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero in Vancouver, saving the decisive spot-kick from Cucho Hernández, while Rubén Vargas calmly slotted home the winner.
Head coach Murat Yakin was visibly emotional afterwards, telling Swiss broadcaster SRF that the shootout was both a nerve-wracking ordeal and a moment of pure catharsis. 'You almost feel like you're in a flow and you don't quite know what to take in at the moment. It required an incredible fight from us. A lot of intelligence and patience too, and then this penalty shootout at the end. We finally broke this curse! I am incredibly happy for everyone: for the players, for our staff and, of course, for the fans back home,' Yakin said.
The boss made a point to single out his goalkeeper for special praise. 'These are simply incredible emotions. The feeling during the decisive kick — fantastic. I want to give a huge compliment to Kobel; he is having a simply fantastic tournament. Nobody wants to hear my game plan, but that's exactly how it turned out,' Yakin added with a smile.
Statistically, the win was even more significant given Switzerland's historically poor record from the spot. Before Thursday, they had won only one of their last six shootouts at major tournaments, and their sole previous World Cup penalty shootout ended in a painful defeat to Ukraine back in 2006.
Now Yakin and his squad must quickly shift focus to the biggest test yet. On Saturday, July 12, in Kansas City, they will face defending champions Argentina and Lionel Messi in the quarterfinals.
