Argentina outlast Switzerland in extra-time thriller after Embolo red card

Argentina dug deep to break a stubborn Swiss side, eventually prevailing 3-1 in extra time after playing over 50 minutes against ten men. Lionel Scaloni’s team found the net twice in the additional period to secure a victory that had looked anything but certain during normal time. Alexis Mac Allister put the Albiceleste ahead inside ten minutes, converting from a corner kick. Switzerland regrouped and grew into the game, hitting back through Dan Ndoye in the 67th minute after a defensive lapse. The match turned on its head five minutes later when Breel Embolo received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb. Despite being a man down, Switzerland defended heroically to force extra time. But the fatigue eventually told. Julian Álvarez fired Argentina back in front in the 112th minute, and Lautaro Martínez added a third deep into first-half stoppage time of extra time to seal the result. Argentina: E. Martínez — Molina (Montiel, 85), Romero, Lis. Martínez, Tagliafico (González, 78) — De Paul (Laut. Martínez, 85), Mac Allister, Paredes (López, 110), E. Fernández (Almada, 91) — Messi, J. Álvarez.
