England and Manchester City left-back Nico O'Riley is bracing for the biggest test of his career as he prepares to face Lionel Messi in the World Cup semifinal against Argentina on Wednesday.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the 21-year-old didn’t hide his excitement: “I can’t wait. It’s a unique opportunity. He’s nearing the end of his career, but for me he’s the greatest player ever to touch a football pitch. So yeah, I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
O’Riley is well aware of the historic rivalry between England and Argentina. In an interview with talkSPORT, he said: “I know there’s a bit of history there, and I know they’ll be fired up by that. So we’ll just match their energy, their passion, and work even harder. Big challenge, big task — but I believe in myself.”
The young defender has been leaning on mental techniques, especially manifestation — focusing his thoughts on the desired outcome. He revealed that three years ago he visualized himself playing for England at a World Cup and starring for Manchester City. Both have come true. Now he pictures lifting the trophy.
“I always believe in the future and dream about it. Every night. Just the celebrations, the unity in the dressing room, coming home. That would be amazing. I have a winner’s mindset. If you believe, dream, and act — anything is possible. Manifestation is a big thing for me,” O’Riley explained.
England hope their young full-back’s unwavering faith and confidence can help the team overcome Argentina and take a giant step toward the coveted title.
