Gallardo Emerges as Candidate to Take Over Argentina

Marcelo Gallardo is being lined up as a potential replacement for Lionel Scaloni as head coach of the Argentina national team, according to insider Nicolo Schira. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is reportedly ready to turn to the 50-year-old if Scaloni decides to step away. AFA's top choice had been Diego Simeone, but “El Cholo” has no intention of leaving Atlético Madrid anytime soon, forcing the federation to explore other options. Scaloni’s current contract runs until December. Under his guidance, Argentina finished second at the last 2026 World Cup, won the 2022 World Cup, and secured two Copa América titles. Gallardo most recently managed River Plate, where he collected 15 trophies. He has also coached Nacional and Saudi side Al-Ittihad.
