Nicolás Otamendi Retires from Argentina National Team

0
Argentina center-back Nicolás Otamendi has called time on his international career following the national team's defeat in the World Cup final. At 38 years old, the veteran defender released a heartfelt statement thanking his teammates, family, and the entire Argentine public for their unwavering support. "We go home with broken hearts but with the peace of mind that we gave everything. There are jerseys you defend for life – and we defended this one to the last breath," Otamendi wrote. Otamendi made his Argentina debut on May 20, 2009, in a friendly against Panama (3-1). Over the next 17 years, he earned 139 caps, scored 8 goals, and registered 3 assists. His trophy cabinet includes the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles (2021, 2024). The decision comes after he first hinted at retirement a year ago following a friendly with Venezuela, though he held off on a final call while still hoping to make the squad for the 2026 World Cup.
