Cocaine suspicion for Australia international Cristian Volpato after late-night speeding in Sydney

A controversy has erupted around 22-year-old Sassuolo midfielder and Australia national team player Cristian Volpato after an incident in Sydney. According to New South Wales Police, Volpato was pulled over twice on Thursday night for speeding, and a roadside drug test produced a preliminary positive result for cocaine. The first stop came around 11:05 PM on the Anzac Bridge. Police clocked Volpato's BMW Coupe traveling between 86 and 94 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Breathalyzer came back clean, so he received a warning. But two hours later, officers stopped the same car on the same stretch - this time at 109 km/h. During that stop, a drug swab gave a preliminary positive for cocaine. Police issued a speeding notice and temporarily suspended Volpato's international driving privileges in the state. A secondary oral fluid sample has been sent for lab analysis. The investigation remains active. Football Australia responded quickly: "We have been in contact with the player and are continuing to monitor the situation while supporting him through this process." The players' union also confirmed it is aware and will provide assistance. BBC Sport has approached Sassuolo for comment. Volpato joined the Italian club in 2023, making 24 league appearances (the team finished 11th last season). On the international stage, Volpato previously represented Italy at youth levels but switched allegiance to Australia in May. He was included in the Socceroos squad for the 2026 World Cup, playing three matches as the side reached the Round of 32, where they lost 2-4 on penalties to Egypt.
