Neymar's Double Not Enough as Santos Stumble Against Bottom Side Chapecoense

0
Santos once again failed to deliver in front of their own fans, settling for a 2-2 draw against Serie A's last-placed team, Chapecoense, in Round 20 of the Brazilian championship. It was a frustrating night for the home side, who twice had to come from behind to salvage a point. The opener came in the 36th minute. Neymar exchanged a quick one-two inside the box and slotted calmly into the far corner, leaving the goalkeeper no chance. Santos looked comfortable, but the lead didn't last long. Early in the second half, Marcinho arrived at the back post to convert a cross from the right and equalize. Ten minutes later, Chapecoense stunned the home crowd by taking the lead. Joao Ananias, attempting to intercept a similar delivery from the same flank, turned the ball into his own net. It was a classic own-goal nightmare. Santos pushed forward but struggled to break down a stubborn defense until the 89th minute, when Neymar stepped up to convert a penalty with composure, completing his brace. Neymar's numbers this season remain impressive: eight goals and four assists in 16 appearances. But individual brilliance hasn't translated into consistent results for Santos. With 22 points from 20 games, they sit 14th in the table. Chapecoense, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom with just ten points.
