Rayo Vallecano Lose Home Stadium Three Weeks Before La Liga Start

Spanish club Rayo Vallecano are facing a major infrastructure crisis after being stripped of the licence to play at the Estadio de Vallecas less than three weeks before the new La Liga season begins. The regional government of Madrid, which owns the ground, suspended the match licence following an audit that uncovered critical health and safety failures. According to the government's report, the main reasons for the drastic move were the risk of Legionnaires' disease outbreaks and a high fire hazard. Inspectors found piles of rubbish bags and debris in the stadium's lobby and canteen, serious electrical faults, a lack of proper maintenance and unverified water quality. Mariano de Paco, the regional director for sport, culture and tourism in Madrid, did not hold back: "We tried to put things right, but we reached a point of no return. The club failed to comply, so the authorities had to act. What has happened is unacceptable." De Paco said emergency repair work would begin immediately but could take anywhere from two to six months. None of this came as a surprise to fans or players. President Raúl Martín Presa has long been criticised for neglecting modernisation of the club. De Paco added that he had not even been able to get hold of the president to discuss the situation. Last season, Rayo players complained to the Spanish Football Association about conditions, calling the pitch at Vallecas unplayable. There was no hot water in the showers and cleaning was insufficient. The training ground was so badly affected by mould that the squad could not use it. In February, the club was already forced to play a home match against Atlético Madrid at Leganés's stadium instead. The club's infrastructure problems also hurt supporters. Rayo Vallecano remain the only top‑flight Spanish side without an online ticketing system, forcing fans to queue for hours at a tiny box office. Despite all of this, the club launched a season‑ticket renewal campaign last week, raising adult prices by 15%. Interestingly, a new clause appeared in the renewal terms: if matches cannot be played at Vallecas, season‑ticket holders will be offered seats "in the closest possible location" at an alternative venue. So far, no alternative stadium has been confirmed for matches. Rayo's first home game of the season, against Alavés, is scheduled for August 20 - and where it will be played remains a complete mystery.
