English FA introduces stricter punishments for discrimination

The Football Association of England (FA) has announced tougher disciplinary sanctions for discriminatory conduct ahead of the new season. The updated rules apply to players, coaches, and all match participants. They target so-called aggravated breaches - cases where misconduct includes direct or indirect references to ethnic origin, skin color, race, nationality, religion or belief, gender, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics. "Stronger measures are needed to tackle this abhorrent behavior. That is why the revised sanction guidelines now require regulatory commissions to impose a standard minimum 10-match suspension in such cases. Commissions may hand down a penalty more severe than the standard 10-match ban if they deem there are significant aggravating factors," the FA stated. If mitigating circumstances are present, the suspension can be reduced but must remain at least six matches. For any repeat offense, the sanctions will be even stricter.
