Franco Baresi, Milan and Italy legend, dies aged 66

Franco Baresi, one of the greatest players in Milan's history, has died at the age of 66. The former Rossoneri and Italy captain had been fighting a serious illness in recent years, according to Italian media. Milan confirmed the tragic news with an official statement, saying the club's history is in mourning. The Rossoneri stressed that Baresi's example and honesty will always be part of the club's DNA, just like his legendary number 6 shirt, and offered condolences to his family. Baresi spent his entire professional career at Milan, making 719 appearances - a club record. He won six Serie A titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and four Italian Super Cups. For Italy, he earned 81 caps. He lifted the World Cup in 1982, finished as runner-up at the 1994 World Cup and took bronze at the 1990 edition. After retiring, Baresi stayed within the Milan structure and served as honorary vice president of the club from 2020.
