Infantino's FIFA reelection support at risk as commercial rights plan sparks backlash

Gianni Infantino's grip on FIFA's presidency is looking less secure. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, at least 20 national football associations are now discussing whether to withdraw their support from the incumbent. Infantino had counted on the backing of more than 200 federations, but the mood has shifted since FIFA unveiled plans for a new subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). The company would manage commercial rights for major tournaments, including the World Cup. FFE is reportedly valued at up to $20 billion, with FIFA planning to sell more than 20% of its shares to private investors. Many federation officials see the project as a test of confidence in Infantino. Behind the scenes, UEFA is holding closed talks about a possible rival candidate for the vote in March 2027. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has been mentioned as a potential contender, though he is not currently planning to enter the race. FIFA has declined to comment, with sources pointing to divisions even within Infantino's inner circle. The president had earlier promised national associations up to $40 million in funding if they approved selling a stake in the World Cup's commercial rights to private investors.
