Manchester United win Snapdragon Cup after comeback over Atlético Madrid

0
Manchester United claimed the Snapdragon Cup on Saturday after coming from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm. Michael Carrick's side needed a response after Atlético's fast start. Diego Simeone's team pressed high and took the lead early when Arnau Ortiz's attempted cross flew in, catching United's defence and goalkeeper off guard. United levelled eight minutes into the second half. Shea Lacey, the young prospect, won a penalty and Bryan Mbeumo converted. Mbeumo then completed the comeback with his second goal in the 74th minute. Atlético pushed for an equaliser and twice struck the woodwork, but United held on. The afternoon also brought a milestone: 15-year-old JJ Gabriel made his first-team debut. New Chelsea signing Andrey Santos started in midfield and lasted 82 minutes. Mbeumo, the game's decisive figure, told MUTV afterwards that the side stuck to its plan and the priority is to be fully ready for the new campaign. Carrick, appointed permanently after last season's third-place Premier League finish, said there were plenty of encouraging signs from the performance. United have now played three pre-season matches, following a loss to Wrexham in Helsinki and a 5-0 win over Rosenborg in Trondheim. They remain in Sweden and will face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg next Saturday. Manchester United have also been linked with Igor Thiago.
