European Federations Could Pull Support for Infantino Before FIFA Election

0
European football associations are exploring whether to withdraw the letters in which they backed Gianni Infantino for the next FIFA presidential election. The discussion is viewed as an attempt to ratchet up pressure on the incumbent and push him to reconsider his plans. According to people familiar with the matter, both a coordinated withdrawal and a gradual retreat by individual federations are on the table. Either scenario would effectively send a public sign of no confidence in Infantino. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin has already asked associations that gave Infantino their written support to revoke those statements. Among UEFA's 55 affiliates, only Germany, Romania and Norway did not sign a letter endorsing the FIFA president. In total, 200 of 211 FIFA member associations had backed Infantino, although some are said to have kept private doubts about another term. The FIFA presidential vote is scheduled for March 2027.
