UEFA weighs legal fight with FIFA as Infantino row deepens

UEFA is weighing legal action against FIFA over the decisions and conduct of president Gianni Infantino. The tension has escalated since FIFA scrapped the FIFA Forward Enterprise project, a plan to bring private investment into the organisation's commercial assets, including the World Cup. The decision to drop the scheme was welcomed by UEFA. Now the European body wants more: a shake-up of FIFA's governance. Central to that push is Infantino's departure. If he stays, UEFA says it is ready to trigger no-confidence proceedings. UEFA is also demanding that all material linked to the project be preserved. That includes emails, messages sent through messenger apps, SMS, internal memos and minutes from meetings. Infantino had earlier contacted all 211 FIFA member associations asking them to back the plan. Each federation was promised $40 million if the initiative was approved by September 19. Infantino has already announced he will stand for another presidential term in 2027. After the project collapsed, the Football Association of Wales became the first member association to withdraw its support for his candidacy. Under FIFA's statutes, an extraordinary congress and a no-confidence vote require the backing of at least 20 percent of members. UEFA's 55 member associations give it enough votes to set that process in motion.
