Trump Ready to Back Infantino as FIFA President Faces Pressure
0
US President Donald Trump is prepared to do what it takes to keep Gianni Infantino in charge of FIFA, even as calls for his resignation grow louder. Sources close to the American administration say Trump looks favorably on Infantino after their cooperation during the buildup to and hosting of the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
One administration official said the president credits Infantino with helping make the tournament a success. "Gianni helped us deliver the best World Cup in history. The president respects him a great deal, and I am sure he will do everything he can to help him," the unnamed official said.
Infantino came under serious scrutiny after putting forward a plan to sell stakes in the commercial assets of FIFA and the World Cup, a project valued at around $15 billion. The idea drew opposition from several football federations, including UEFA, and the FIFA president was eventually forced to drop it.
At the same time, opposition to another term for Infantino is building within the sport. The English FA and a number of European federations have withdrawn their support for him, citing governance concerns and a lack of transparency in decision-making. Still, Infantino retains backing in parts of the football community, and the prospect of a vote on his future as FIFA president is emerging as one of the biggest talking points in the international game.
