Melbourne Victory won't rush Mata: Savarese says decision is his to make

New Melbourne Victory coach Giovanni Savarese has made Juan Mata's future at AAMI Park the club's biggest offseason priority - but he insists there will be no pressure on the Spaniard to rush a decision. Mata arrived in Melbourne after a difficult year with Western Sydney Wanderers and quickly became one of the A-League's standout players. He claimed the Johnny Warren Medal for the 2025/26 season after a campaign that produced five goals and 13 assists, often deciding games on his own. With his one-year contract now expired, the 38-year-old's next step remains uncertain. Speaking after winning his individual award, Mata said he wanted to spend time with his family before committing to anything. Melbourne Victory have consistently said they will give him the space he needs, and Savarese, who took over from Arthur Diles, repeated that message during his first press conference as head coach. "I've had conversations with him. Of course, the club wants him back - not just the board, but me and the entire coaching staff. He is a role model in every way, as a player and as a person. We want this to be his decision. We're giving him time because he has earned it. I'll keep talking to him and hope everything works out," Savarese said. The coach is confident Mata's respect for the club means he won't leave them hanging for too long. Still, Savarese and football director John Didulica have already begun weighing alternatives in case the Spaniard moves on. "It's very hard to find someone with that kind of experience, but we have to start looking at options gradually," he admitted. Meanwhile, Victory have been busy strengthening the squad. They have signed striker Harry Sawyer and defenders Philipp Ziereis and Tom Lockyer, while extending deals for Charles Nduka and Franco Lino. Savarese is pleased with the group he has, even if keeping Mata would be the ideal finish to their offseason work. "The key thing is that I feel we have a strong team and a good dressing room. Mata's situation remains the most important topic, but right now I'm completely satisfied with the players at my disposal for the new season," he added.
