Celtic manager Martin O'Neill in hospital after minor procedure

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is under observation in hospital after undergoing a minor medical procedure. The club has moved to reassure supporters that there is no serious cause for concern, though it has not disclosed details about the procedure. In a statement posted on social media, Celtic said: 'In response to speculation, we can confirm Martin O'Neill has had a minor procedure in hospital. We expect Martin to be discharged within the next day or two. On behalf of Martin, we would like to thank his supporters for their good wishes, but also ask that Martin and his family's right to privacy be respected.' O'Neill, 74, was in the dugout on Monday as his team opened the new Scottish Premiership season with a 1-0 home win over Dundee. He returned to Celtic last October, two decades after his first, highly successful spell at the club, following Brendan Rodgers' sudden resignation. Before that, the Irishman had not managed a team since his time at Nottingham Forest in 2019. There was a brief handover to Wilfried Nancy in December, but Nancy was dismissed after eight matches and O'Neill again took control. He went on to finish last season with an impressive double, winning the Premiership and the Scottish Cup. Those trophies were his eighth and ninth major honours with Celtic. In June, after successful talks with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond, he signed a one-year contract with an option for a further season. Celtic and their supporters will now hope for a quick recovery and a return to full training.
