Former Ajax and Uruguay Midfielder Lodeiro Calls Time on Career

Nicolás Lodeiro has decided to hang up his boots. The former Ajax and Uruguay midfielder confirmed the news on Instagram, bringing an end to a career that took him through South America and Major League Soccer. The 37-year-old's final club was Nacional Montevideo, where he made 19 appearances and contributed one assist this season. Lodeiro first broke through at Nacional in 2007 before moving to Ajax three years later. He went on to represent Botafogo, Corinthians, Boca Juniors, Seattle, Orlando City and Houston. Along the way, he claimed two league titles each in Uruguay, the Netherlands and MLS, plus one championship in Argentina, as well as the Dutch Cup, Argentine Cup, Uruguayan Liguilla and CONCACAF Champions League. On the international stage, Lodeiro earned 60 caps for Uruguay and scored five goals, and he was part of the squad that won the Copa América in 2011.
