On Tuesday, FC Montreal officially announced the signing of legendary Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez. The 37-year-old, who played for Spanish side Sevilla last season (4 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions), has signed a deal until May 2027. The contract will cover the current MLS campaign and the sprint season in the first half of 2027. In addition, the club has retained an option to extend the cooperation for the 2027-28 season, which will be held under the league's new revised calendar. Sanchez himself does not hide his enthusiasm for his new stage in his career: "I am very happy to join Montreal and take on this new challenge. I am grateful to the club for their trust and I want to apply my experience so that we can achieve our goals and create unforgettable moments for the fans. I am here to give everything I have for the club and for this city," said the rookie. The move brings to an end Sanchez's 18-year European tour, during which he defended the colors of the world's most famous clubs. Starting his career with Chile's Cobreloa in 2005, he went on to play for River Plate, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United and Inter Milan. During his distinguished club career, the Chilean played more than 800 matches in all competitions. Scored more than 200 goals, won six national championships and won 11 cup trophies. FC Montreal senior director Luca Saputo called the move extremely important for the club: "Alexis possesses exceptional technical qualities and experience at the highest level of world football. His leadership qualities and competitive mindset are fully in line with the ambitions of our club. We are confident that he will have an immediate impact both on the field and in the dressing room," the official emphasized. At the international level, Sanchez is a true idol for his country. He led Chile to two consecutive Copa América victories (2015 and 2016), defeating Lionel Messi-led Argentina in both finals. At the 2016 tournament, Alexis received the Golden Ball as the best player of the competition. Currently, Sánchez is the absolute record holder of the Chilean national team both in the number of goals scored (51) and in the number of matches played (168). Montreal is currently in second-to-last place in the MLS Eastern Conference with just 16 points from 18 games played. The team's next game is at home against D.C. United on August 15, where fans may already be able to see the Chilean star in action.
