Liverpool fans are demanding an explanation regarding the possible acquisition of a consortium of 30% of the club's shares

Influential Liverpool fans' organisation, Spirit of Shankly (SoS), has formally approached the club's management, expressing concerns over the potential sale of a significant minority stake. Fans stress that issues of ownership and control are fundamental to the team's future. The announcement comes amid rumors that a consortium of investors are closing in on a deal to buy a 30% stake in Liverpool. The group of potential investors includes global figures: Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon and one of the three richest people on the planet (his fortune is estimated at 210 billion pounds). Although he has no experience in sports management, his resources would be enough to buy the club outright. Eduardo Saverin is a co-founder of Facebook. Amit Bhatia is the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. It is Bhatia who heads the consortium and has significant experience in the sports business, as he was co-owner and director of Queen's Park Rangers for 18 years. SoS asked the club to hold a meeting to discuss possible changes in management. In its statement, the group noted: "The ownership and stewardship of our club is paramount. We have seen similar sales at other clubs, which have led to significant changes in management and football operations, as well as decisions that many would not like to see at Liverpool." Fans want to clearly understand what role the new investors will play, how many seats they will get on the board of directors and how they will affect sports results. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns Liverpool, bought the club in 2010 for £300 million. Today it is estimated to be worth an impressive £4.5 billion. The owners have always shown openness to attracting external funds. In 2023, the Dynasty Equity fund has already acquired about 3% of the shares for 120 million pounds. Last month, the club's chief executive Billy Hogan confirmed the position of principal owner John Henry: the club would seriously consider investment if it would help the team's development. Officially, FSG has so far been limited to a brief statement that Amit Bhatia's consortium has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment. Representatives of Bhatia himself refused to comment further.
