The new Premier League season is just getting underway, but for Manchester United and Ipswich Town, the second round match already has a special meaning. MANCHESTER UNITED — IPSWICH TOWN
SUNDAY 30 AUGUST 18:30 ▪️ OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER ▪️ HEAD REFEREE - CRAIG PAWSON ▪️ LIVE ON SETANTA SPORTS
Manchester United started the new campaign with an unpleasant defeat against Gull City — 0:2 away. Two missed goals even before the break forced Michael Carrick's team to fight back, but after the break, the "red devils" did not find the keys to the opponent's compact defense. At the same time, the problem should not be attributed only to the lack of implementation: the Mancunians clearly lacked control in the middle of the field and sharpness in the final third.
However, the first round also showed who Carrick can count on in building attacks. Bruno Fernandes was one of the team's most active players against Gull City, with the captain scoring three shots and creating three goal chances. Cunha has also been a regular threat on goal and the hosts will have the added advantage of support from the stands on their return to Old Trafford. Personnel issues remain, however, with Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte set to miss the match, while Amad Diallo is out for around six weeks with an ankle injury.
Ipswich Town, on the other hand, got off to a dream start. The Tractors beat Sunderland 2-1, with Jack Clarke scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute. Before that, Emersonn opened the score, and after the break, the home team did not recover after the missed ball and continued to look for their chance. Such persistence earned the three points and continued the team's impressive run, with Ipswich winning four of their last five matches.
Gary O'Neill also received a lot of positive signals from his team ahead of the trip to Manchester. Ipswich not only scored regularly in the pre-season meetings, but also demonstrated a fairly reliable game in front of their own goal - in the last five matches, the team conceded only three goals. At Old Trafford, the visitors will have to withstand much more serious pressure, but fast flanks, counterattacks and active play without the ball can become the main weapon of the "tractors".
The history of confrontation deserves special attention. Manchester United has a clear advantage in face-to-face meetings: in the last five matches, the teams have won three times, another meeting ended in a draw. The last duel at Old Trafford in February 2025 gave five goals and a victory for the hosts — 3:2. At the same time, Ipswich have already proven that they are capable of creating problems for the Mancunians, so the current match is unlikely to be an easy walk for the hosts.
According to bookmakers, Michael Carrick's men have a better chance of success today. Thus, a 1.41 coefficient is offered for the victory of Manchester United in regular time, while the potential success of Ipswich is estimated at 7.90. The probability of a draw is represented by a coefficient of 5.15.
