Arsenal 'close' to mystery centre-back signing as Arteta demands 'different level' targets

0
Mikel Arteta has laid down the gauntlet ahead of the summer window, warning that Arsenal must recruit players capable of raising the bar after back-to-back near-misses in the Premier League and Champions League. Speaking to the club's official channels, the Arsenal boss made it clear that incremental improvements won't cut it anymore. "We know that we want to take this club to a different level. That is going to require a better squad, better individuals," Arteta said. "We have identified where we have opportunities to grow and to improve. Hopefully very soon we can start to put things in a very concrete way." Arteta's ambition is no secret - names like Bruno Guimarães and Vinícius Júnior have been floated as the kind of elite additions the Gunners are targeting. But a more immediate need has reportedly emerged at the back. William Saliba's back injury, which he carried through the 2026 World Cup, is set to keep him sidelined for up to five months. Although surgery has been avoided, the French centre-back's absence has left a gaping hole in Arsenal's defence. According to Brazilian journalist Bruno Andrade, Arsenal are now "close" to signing an unnamed centre-back to plug that gap. "I don't have the name here, so I can't call it an exclusive," Andrade said on his YouTube channel. "But speaking to someone involved in Bruno Guimarães' situation, Arsenal are close to signing a centre-back to solve, for now, the issue created by Saliba's injury. It's a deal that will happen even faster than the Bruno Guimarães transfer. It's really imminent." Arsenal fans will be watching closely - not just for the identity of the mystery defender, but for the marquee moves Arteta insists are coming.
