Rogers vs Barcola: Why Arsenal’s Choice Is Clearer Than It Seems

0
Arsenal are preparing for a busy summer window and the left wing remains a top priority for Mikel Arteta. With Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli sharing duty last season, the Gunners are determined to bring in an upgrade before the September 1 deadline. Two names have emerged as the leading targets: Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola. Both are valued at over €100 million, and while there is a chance Arsenal land both, financial constraints could force them to pick one. On the surface, Rogers looks like a logical option. He has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers over the last two campaigns and is reportedly open to a move to north London. However, his natural game is that of a No.10 or central attacking midfielder, which Arsenal already have covered with Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino and Kai Havertz. Signing Rogers would likely mean playing him out of position — a ribroadcaster investment at that price. Barcola, by contrast, is a pure left winger. His acceleration, close control, and dribbling make him a constant threat to defenders. While his end product can still improve, he delivered 20 goal contributions last season and has Champions League experience from two consecutive titles. PSG may be open to selling if Yan Diomande arrives, as has been speculated. Rogers is a fine footballer and would strengthen Arteta’s squad. But if it comes down to a straight choice between the two, Barcola is the man Arsenal should prioritise.
