Consortium led by Amit Bhatia in talks for minority stake in Liverpool
1
A consortium fronted by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia has entered discussions with Fenway Sports Group over a potential minority investment in Liverpool. Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, recently stepped down as director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers after 18 years. FSG confirmed to sources that Bhatia’s group has expressed interest in a strategic minority stake, though no deal has been finalized yet. The structure would media the 2023 sale of a minority share to Dynasty, a global sports investment firm. FSG bought Liverpool for £300m in 2010 when the club was close to administration, and a deal with Bhatia’s consortium could value the Reds at over $6bn (£4.5bn), according to the Financial Times. Bhatia, a former Morgan Stanley investment banker, now runs construction, real estate and private equity businesses. His marriage to Vanisha Mittal in 2004 was once the most expensive wedding on record. The move comes after FSG abandoned plans to acquire a second European club, a multi-club model that led to the departure of former sporting director Michael Edwards last month. Current sporting director Richard Hughes is handling summer transfers and is reportedly open to a move to Saudi Arabia. Principal owner John W. Henry has kept a low profile since the European Super League fiasco in 2021.
