Norway Weighs Formal Complaint to FIFA Over Balogun Ban Suspension

The Norwegian Football Federation is considering filing a formal complaint with FIFA's ethics committee following the controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun's automatic one-match ban during the World Cup. Balogun, the United States forward, was shown a straight red card in a 2-0 group-stage win over Bosnia-Herzegovina and was expected to miss the round-of-16 clash against Belgium. However, after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the ban was deferred for 12 months. No specific justification was provided beyond a rule allowing for such suspensions. Balogun went on to start the match, which Belgium won 4-1. In a statement to the broadcaster, NFF president Lise Klaveness expressed "strong concern" and confirmed the federation's board will decide at its next meeting whether to lodge a complaint. The NFF has already filed a separate complaint over FIFA awarding its first Peace Prize to President Trump. Klaveness noted that the Balogun case should be included in the existing inquiry to FIFA's ethics committee. The controversy has drawn widespread criticism. The Royal Belgian Football Federation said it was "deeply concerned" and pledged to fight for ethical principles. UEFA described FIFA's actions as an "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision" that had "crossed a red line." Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee acknowledged it could investigate Infantino's involvement, citing the Olympic charter's clause on independence from governmental interference.
