Guardiola rejects Italy job as break from football takes priority

Pep Guardiola has officially turned down the opportunity to become Italy’s next head coach, choosing instead to stick with his plan of taking a prolonged break from the game. The former Manchester City manager, who left the Etihad this summer after a decade in charge, was the subject of intense courtship from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). President Giovanni Malago confirmed earlier this week that talks had taken place and that the federation was willing to make “exceptions” regarding salary structure to land one of the most decorated coaches in modern football. FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini revealed on Thursday that Italy had initially approached Carlo Ancelotti – the current Brazil boss – but Ancelotti opted to remain in his role. With that door closed, Guardiola became the primary target. However, after considering the proposal, the Catalan coach informed the FIGC that he intends to follow through with his previously stated desire to step away, rest, spend time with his family, and travel. The federation is understood to have offered Guardiola significant freedom to shape the role as he saw fit, alongside a massive financial package, in an attempt to convince him to take charge of a national team that has failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups. With Guardiola out of the running, former Italy playmaker Andrea Pirlo – currently managing Dubai-based United FC – has emerged as the frontrunner to lead the Azzurri. The immediate tasks awaiting the new boss include a Nations League group stage against France, Belgium, and Turkey this autumn, followed by the Euro 2028 qualifying campaign.
