Rodri at a crossroads: Real Madrid and Barcelona circling as Man City future hangs in balance

Rodri's future has become one of the biggest stories of the summer, with the Manchester City midfielder reportedly facing interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona. The 30-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad and has not yet signed new terms. Real Madrid have been keen on him for some time, but two separate sources said on Thursday that Spanish champions Barcelona have joined the race. Barcelona sources, when approached for comment, distanced themselves from those claims. Rodri is currently out of action after undergoing back surgery. He missed much of the 2024-25 season because of a serious knee injury and also dealt with a hamstring issue. In the summer, he was back to his best at the World Cup, leading Spain to their second title and being named player of the tournament. He had said earlier this season that his club future would be sorted after the tournament, but the decision is still unresolved. City are on a preseason tour in the Far East and face Arsenal in the Community Shield next Sunday, though Rodri has not yet linked up with his teammates. When he does, the choice is clear: sign the deal City have put on the table, run down his contract and leave as a free agent next summer, or take up the tantalizing prospect of returning to Spain. City sources have insisted they are counting on Rodri for the coming season, and a significant fee would be required before they would even consider selling him. A move to Barcelona would put him in a side that has won the league for the past two seasons and would reunite him with Spain teammates Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi and Pedri. Real Madrid, meanwhile, would give him the chance to link up with former City midfielder Bernardo Silva, who joined on a free this summer, in a team now led by the returning Jose Mourinho. Rodri's past at Atletico Madrid only adds to the tension. He previously said 'you can't turn down the best clubs in the world' when asked about Real, so a move to the Nou Camp would make for a fascinating reception. Since joining City in 2019, Rodri has won four Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups. Losing him after already seeing Silva depart would be a major blow. Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders have all featured in preseason, but none is a natural like-for-like replacement. Club-record signing Elliot Anderson is expected to be a starter, but there would still be a significant void in midfield. City remain in talks to sign 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, but expecting the Moroccan teenager to fill Rodri's boots right away would be a big ask.
