Chelsea given Enzo Fernandez hope as Romano confirms transfer truth
have not yet agreed personal terms with midfielder despite reports to the contrary, according to transfer expert insider.
The Argentina international has been widely tipped to depart Stamford Bridge before the end of the 2026 summer transfer window and it’s understood that he is desperate to join former Blues team-mate Marc Cucurella at Real Madrid.
Fernandez flirted with the idea of joining Los Blancos during the March international break, which resulted in a two-game suspension imposed by then Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, while rumours of a summer switch have ramped up in recent weeks.
Widespread reports have confirmed that Fernandez wants to leave Chelsea following their 10th place finish in the Premier League last season and he is keen to complete a move to Real Madrid as he looks to fight for major club honours on a regular basis.
Fernandez still has six years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea are open to sanctioning a sale if their €140 million valuation is met, with the Argentine not currently on their list of ‘untouchable’ players.
The 25-year-old registered 22 goal contributions in 54 games for the west London giants last season and he has been earmarked as one of Real Madrid’s priority summer targets, with the Spanish outfit looking to oversee a sizable squad overhaul.
Ibrahima Konate, Bernardo Silva and the aforementioned Cucurella have already moved to the Bernabeu ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, while a deal has been fully agreed for Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries too.
Fernandez could therefore become the latest high-profile global superstar to join Real Madrid this summer, although a deal isn’t as advanced as the Spanish media have suggested, according to Romano.
, but this has been denied by Romano.
Enzo Fernandez to Real Madrid transfer truth
“Earlier this week there were reports that Enzo Fernandez was Real Madrid's only midfield target,” Romano told his YouTube channel. “There were also reports that Real Madrid and Chelsea were ready to negotiate, and even suggestions that this could become another ‘Kaka-style’ deal completed within 24 to 48 hours. I told you to stay calm regarding those reports.
“Enzo Fernandez is, for sure, one of the names being discussed at Real Madrid. That's important to clarify. During the meetings involving Jose Mourinho, the directors, and the club's management, Enzo's name was mentioned.
“However, and this is the key point, Enzo is not the only name being discussed. There are four other midfielders being considered in these meetings.
“Before Real Madrid move forward and decide to pursue a new midfielder, they need and want to complete some outgoing transfers. There is the Nico Paz situation to resolve. Dani Ceballos is expected to leave as a free agent and is currently negotiating his exit agreement with Real Madrid.
“So there are still several situations to clarify regarding departures from the club. Nothing is happening this weekend, and as I told you on Tuesday and again on Friday, nothing is happening this week regarding a midfielder or specifically Enzo Fernandez.”
Romano continued: “Real Madrid have several options. There is a shortlist of five midfielders at the club, and they are assessing the best option from both a technical and financial point of view. That's the current situation.
“Real Madrid have not opened talks with Chelsea. They are not negotiating with Chelsea at this stage, and they have not even agreed personal terms with Enzo. So these are still very early stages.
“At the moment, it's simply a case of Real Madrid discussing and evaluating several midfielders. There are no advanced or concrete negotiations taking place, and that's a very important point to clarify.”
