Chelsea have agreed to keep Emmanuel Emegha at the club this season, with that decision all but confirming Nicolas Jackson ’s departure on a permanent deal.
The Blues agreed a deal to sign Emegha from Strasbourg last September and he formally joined the club for a fee worth around €25 million in July following an injury-hit final season in France.
The 23-year-old’s injury troubles have continued at Stamford Bridge and after impressing in behind-closed-doors friendlies against Crawley Town and Bromley, scoring in both matches, he missed the entirety of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia after picking up a hamstring strain.
The Dutchman has now returned to first-team training and insider sources have confirmed that he will be part of Chelsea’s squad this season, despite previous rumours suggesting that he could be sent out on loan or even sold.
As a result of this decision, Joao Pedro, Danny Welbeck and Emegha are expected to form Chelsea’s striker unit for the 2026-27 campaign, with the Blues set to intensify talks to sell Liam Delap, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana, Deivid Washington and Jackson before Transfer Deadline Day on 1 September.
With no European football on offer this season, Chelsea officials are aware they need to trim down their first-team squad and with Emegha set to stay at Stamford Bridge, Jackson is expected to depart on a permanent deal at some point over the next two weeks.
Chelsea have set a €75m asking price for the Senegal striker, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, but sanctioning a permanent sale, as expected, will undoubtedly go down as a huge error.
Nicolas Jackson to leave Chelsea
Jackson has split opinion during his time at Chelsea and there is little doubt that his finishing often leaves a lot to be desired. He is far from clinical in the penalty box and the aforementioned Pedro is certainly a more complete centre forward.
However, the 25-year-old is still an incredibly talented player and Chelsea will likely rue their decision to sell him if a transfer is agreed before Deadline Day.
Jackson is an excellent threat in behind opposition defences, he is skilled at receiving the ball with his back to goal, and his link-up play with team-mates is genuinely fantastic. His goal output of 30 strikes in 81 Chelsea games isn’t awful either and it’s no coincidence that Cole Palmer's best ever career form came while playing alongside the Senegal star.
Emegha, on the other hand, is unproven in the Premier League and it’s a huge statement of intent to favour the Dutchman over Jackson, even if Chelsea are able to turn a major profit on the latter.
Emegha was excellent whenever fully fit during his time at Strasbourg, but he missed 33 games through injury last season and his consistent fitness issues could soon become a major issue for Chelsea.
Jackson, meanwhile, hasn’t missed that many games through injury in his entire senior career and as a proven asset with genuine quality in the final-third, Chelsea are making a big mistake by allowing him to leave.
