Chelsea Transfer Roundup: Welbeck Talks Underway, Alonso Expects Busy Window

0
Chelsea are exploring a summer move for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, with initial talks already held and optimism from both sides that a deal can be struck, according to multiple reports. The 35-year-old former England international has one year left on his contract at the AMEX Stadium, and Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has endorsed the signing, valuing Welbeck's leadership as the Blues look to add experience to their squad. Alongside Welbeck, Chelsea have also opened discussions with Jordan Henderson, with Brentford reportedly willing to let him leave for free despite his contract running until 2027. Alonso himself admitted the club expects to be extremely active until the transfer deadline on 1 September. "We need to be flexible and quick to act," the Chelsea boss told reporters. "We have a clear plan, but it will probably change until the last day of the market. We want a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality." In midfield, Chelsea are preparing a second bid for Bournemouth's Alex Scott after their initial €75 million offer was rejected. The 22-year-old, who impressed last season, has turned down a contract extension and is seen as a key target by the Chelsea hierarchy. The pursuit is expected to intensify once the signing of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix is finalised. Elsewhere, Chelsea are close to an agreement for Bayer Leverkusen winger Kerim Alajbegovic, with a €40 million bid submitted. Personal terms are not yet finalised, with Juventus also in the picture. Atletico Madrid have shown interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, though a deal depends on potential sales. Manchester City are also monitoring the Argentine, while Real Madrid have pulled out of the race. Additionally, Chelsea have added Barcelona defender Gerard Martin to their list of targets.
