Chelsea seal deal for Valentin Barco – insider confirms signing from Strasbourg

Chelsea have wrapped up a deal to bring Argentina international Valentin Barco to Stamford Bridge, with transfer insider insider calling the move “100% confirmed” and saying an official announcement is imminent. The 22-year-old midfielder arrives from Strasbourg, making the switch in what is the latest transfer between the two BlueCo-owned clubs. Barco, who was part of Argentina’s World Cup runner-up squad, is expected to serve as an alternative to Enzo Fernandez in central midfield. Barco had already bid farewell to Strasbourg at the end of the Ligue 1 season, posting an emotional message: “Today, I announce my departure from this club, which I joined with high hopes. In a year and a half, I've had some wonderful moments, especially the most beautiful: the birth of my daughter … I will continue to support the club from afar.” No transfer fee has been disclosed, though data analytics firm SciSports gives Barco an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €27.8 million. The Argentine will sign a long-term contract in west London. Barco’s development has been shaped by two former Strasbourg managers. Liam Rosenior, who later had a brief spell in charge of Chelsea, converted him from a left-back into a central midfielder. More recently, Gary O’Neil praised Barco’s intensity: “His enthusiasm is important to us. In training as in matches, he wants to win everything. He wants his team to give its best. He's managed to find the right balance: he's motivated, but he knows how to control himself.” Comparisons with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez are inevitable. Both are deep-lying midfielders for Argentina and were teammates at the 2026 World Cup. However, while Fernandez operates as a box-to-box presence, Barco tends to orchestrate play from a slightly deeper station. Their shared edge was visible when Barco sprinted onto the pitch after Fernandez’s equaliser against England in the World Cup semi-final, earning a clip to the back of the head from Jude Bellingham.
