Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has confirmed that he wants Enzo Fernandez ’s future to be resolved as soon as possible amid significant transfer interest from Manchester City .
Ahead of this summer, Fernandez expressed his desire to explore a possible move to Real Madrid and after Los Blancos exited the race to sign him, he has now turned his attention to reuniting with Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City are keen to agree a deal after sanctioning the sale of Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle United, and rumours suggest they are now willing to match Chelsea’s €140 million asking price before the summer transfer window closes on 1 September.
The eight-time Premier League champions missed Chelsea’s self-imposed deadline of 14 August to finalise a transfer, but it’s understood that an agreement could still be reached and talks between the two clubs are likely to intensify over the next few days.
Unlike several other Blues stars with uncertain futures, Fernandez continues to train with the Chelsea first-team and he was named on the substitutes bench for their 3-2 win over Fulham in their first fixture of the new Premier League season on Monday night, replacing Romeo Lavia in the second-half.
When asked about Fernandez’s future after his first win as Chelsea boss, Alonso told broadcaster Match of the Day : “In football, I am not surprised by anything. We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”
Xabi Alonso happy with performance in Fulham 2-3 Chelsea
Chelsea’s new-look front three of Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer were all on the scoresheet at Craven Cottage, and Alonso was keen to praise his players following an encouraging first win of the season.
“I think it was a professional performance,” he added. “The game had different momentums. To win away in the Premier League is normally tough. We were prepared for that. Happy with the performance. It is a good first day.
“Great combination, great quality. We know if we reach them [Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer] in good positions, they have this talent to create special things and I am very happy the three forwards have scored.
“I have really enjoyed his [Palmer] performance. He has played with responsibility, with maturity but as well with freedom. It is very important for me that we get the best from Cole when he takes this role. He feels where he has to be involved and I am happy for him. If we want to have a good team, we need a great Cole.
“It is still a process for sure. We need to keep working, analysing and improving. Every game is a lesson.”
