Infantino keeps FIFA presidency after Rabat show of support

Gianni Infantino will stay on as FIFA president after the organisation's senior executives gave him a public show of support at a meeting in Morocco on Wednesday. Infantino had called the management board to FIFA's Africa headquarters in Rabat after growing criticism over the shelved plan to sell commercial and event operations to private investors. The proposal, known as Fifa Forward Enterprise, had placed his leadership under fresh scrutiny. UEFA said over the weekend that it no longer had confidence in Infantino, describing the plan as a "shabby, back room, opaque deal". There was criticism from inside FIFA as well. Secretary general Mattias Grofstrom, who attended Wednesday's gathering, had sent an internal memo to staff on Tuesday calling the situation "a sad and reproachable series of events". After the meeting, Grofstrom and the management board issued a statement in which they "reaffirmed their full support" for Infantino as president.
