FA to impose minimum 10-match ban for discriminatory offences

The Football Association has confirmed that from the start of the new season, any player, manager, or technical area staff found guilty of discrimination will face a suspension of at least 10 matches. This represents a significant hardening of the governing body's stance on misconduct related to ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion, sex, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, or disability. Previously, what the FA classified as "aggravated breaches" of Rule E3.2 carried a range of six to 12 matches, with six matches being the standard minimum. Under the updated policy, six-match bans will only be considered when there are clear mitigating factors or if an individual admits the breach at the earliest possible opportunity. In all other cases, the starting point has moved to a straight 10-match suspension. A regulatory commission still has the power to impose a longer sanction - potentially beyond 12 matches - if it finds "significant" aggravating circumstances. For repeat offenders who commit two or more separate aggravated breaches, the FA has warned that time-based suspensions of any length could be applied in "very serious cases". The FA described the change as part of its commitment to "delivering a game free from discrimination". In a statement, the organisation acknowledged that "while significant progress has been made in recent years, discriminatory conduct continues to be a challenge across the game" and that "enhanced measures are necessary to tackle this abhorrent conduct".
