Scottish Premiership Shuffles as European Play-Offs Force Postponements

0
All five Scottish sides currently competing in European tournaments have exercised their right to postpone Premiership fixtures scheduled for Saturday, August 22, as the qualifying play-off rounds loom. The play-offs for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League are spread across two legs, sandwiching the affected weekend. Both Celtic and Rangers are already guaranteed a place in those decisive ties, though Rangers still await confirmation of which competition they will land in. Since April 2025, clubs involved in Europe have been able to unilaterally delay domestic league matches, removing the previous requirement for both teams to agree. Celtic, the reigning Premiership champions, do not yet know their opponent in the Champions League play-offs - a stage where they were eliminated by Kazakh side Kairat Almaty last season. Hearts face a tough task, trailing 4-0 on aggregate after the first leg of their Champions League second qualifying round tie against Sturm Graz. They are expected to drop into the third round of Europa League qualifying, where Rangers have already been drawn against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok. The only scenario in which Hearts avoid a play-off is if they overturn the deficit against Sturm Graz and then lose in the third round of Champions League qualifying - which would send them directly into the Europa League league phase. Motherwell and Hibernian are in the midst of their Conference League second round qualifying ties. Their league matches will only be postponed if they advance to the play-offs. Motherwell are 2-0 up on aggregate against Faroese side HB, while Hibs lost the first leg by the same scoreline against Kosovan club Malisheva. Rearranged matches are set to be played in midweek slots on either September 8/9 or September 15/16. Full list of postponed fixtures on August 22: Dundee United v Dundee goes ahead as planned; Falkirk v Hearts - postponed if Hearts reach a play-off; Hibernian v Kilmarnock - postponed if Hibs reach the Conference League play-offs; Motherwell v Aberdeen - postponed if Motherwell reach the Conference League play-offs; Rangers P-P St Mirren - already postponed as Rangers will be in play-off action; St Johnstone P-P Celtic - postponed as Celtic are in the Champions League play-offs.
